The Dark Tower Finally Releases a Trailer!

Hey everyone, here with a very special bit of news! The film adaptation of The Dark Tower has finally released a trailer! And of course it had to do so while I was out of town for a couple of days and didn’t have time to do a proper review for it (although a post about what we did while we were gone is also forthcoming…). So now that we’re home again and work is done for the week, let’s check out our first look at The Dark Tower.

Character Design Challenge #320 – Art Deco – Results

Honourable mention this week goes to Calvary Red. The use of simple shapes and clean lines is really well done.

And the win goes to...

What Were They Thinking?: Car-tastrophic

There are some ideas in comics that are offensively bad. Storylines that make you say "why did they think that was ever a good idea" out of disgust and anger. But there are also other times where you say "why?" just out of pure confusion, because an idea that got to publication seems so pointless and so redundant that it should never have been given the go ahead in the first place. And it is the later we are dealing with one this weeks edition of What Were They Thinking? (the place where we look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comics history) as we are taking a look at The Spider-Mobile.

Caption Contest #93

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week you have to replace the caption for this panel:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (April 10th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Character Design Challenge #320 – Art Deco.

Your challenge this week is to use HeroMachine to create an Art Deco style poster that focuses on one of the following topics: travel, music, fashion, architecture or film.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, May 7th at 9:00am Eastern.

I’m Still Around

I just wanted to stop by and let you all know I am still around and doing well. I know I haven't written anything in a long time, I have a lot of things going on right now so that combined with a  severe case of writers block has kept my  participation on the site as simply a reader! But you are all in the more then  capable hands of Jr, melmo44, and djuby which are all better writers the  I ever was! Good work guys!! I'll see if I can get past this writers block and get some Anime Talk and or Kaldath's Corners up in the near future.

Character Design Challenge #319 – Masterworks – Results

Two Machiners entered this week's CDC and WOW is all I have to say! The challenge was ti recreate a section from a famous Seurat painting,

Christi S. captured the texture and sense of shadow and light of the original,

While HerrD emphasized Seurat's use of pointilism in his entry.

So to the win...

I always said I would never end a CDC in a tie, but this week  I cannot determine a winner.  Both entries address the challenge beautifully and effectively. In the past, when two pieces are very close, I would break the tie based on which piece I could see competing for CDC of the Year, and this week I think both are worthy.

So for the first, and possibly the last time we have a draw. Beautiful work by tiy both, and thanks for entering.

What Were They Thinking?: Ultimate Stupidity

Here on What Were They Thinking we like to look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comic book history. And, as you might expect, cross-overs are always a good place to look for this kind of behaviour. They are the home of such "classics" as the reality punch, two year long clone conspiracies and wars between superhero teams. But which cross-over is the worst of all time? That is a hard question to answer, but I think we can all agree that the title would have to go to Marvel. I mean, they are the people responsible for Civil War, Avengers vs. X-Men and the subject of todays missive, the story which may just take the title of worst cross-over. I am, of course, talking about this...

Dr. Malcolm Returns to the Park!

As I may have hinted before several times, Jurassic Park is a big deal in our house. As in, my other half is currently writing up scripts for videos because it's the 20th anniversary of The Lost World this year kind of important. So naturally it didn't take us long to hear word going around last night that Jeff Goldblum, aka Dr. Ian Malcolm, was set to return to the franchise. Given the nature of the Internet, we waited to see some further confirmation of this before reporting. And....
