Kairulan Facts of the Week #6:
    Works in progress

This is a progress update and plan of action.

I’m currently partway through an overhaul of the wiki, which involves going through every single page and fixing it so all the links go to the right place. This could take a while, but if I get a solid hour or two to work on it I can get it done. Smile

After that, I plan to finish writing the histories for the Dragons and Elves, draw and scan in a map of Kairula – again, this could take a while – and update all the pictures to have backgrounds and shading. This has also been started, but is likely to take a lot of time. Frown

I’m also making a series of new creatures, including several Djinn. One of them is an Ifrit, so thanks for that suggestion Ximero. I’m still deciding what to do about Atlantis, and I’ve had a lovely and very creative suggestion from someone: that they died, but became ocean spirits. I’d love to know who that was so I can thank them. Cool

Finally, I’m going to be fulfilling all my promises of pictures that are dotted around the wiki (where it says “Picture of this coming soon” and has said it for about a year or so). Embarassed

I don’t think that’s a bug. It just…happens. It’s the way it loads. Also, if it’s taking 10 seconds to load you need a better internet connection.

OK, new tutorial. As requested by djuby, a tutorial on how to dress the 3/4 male torso. This tutorial assumes you’re completely new to masking and have no idea how to do it, so if that doesn’t apply to you, please don’t be offended if you feel you’re being treated like an idiot.
To start with, this is the body we’re dressing, coloured the way I want it.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking1.png
Now choose the top you want on it. I’ll use the same example as MDM.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking2.png
Colour the top and move it out of the way. Now get a square Insignia and resize it so it covers half of the torso. The line should be over the middle of the chest – this is usually slightly slanted, so you’ll need to rotate the insignia about 2 degrees.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking3.png
It’s easier if you make the insignia transparent except for the lines. Place another one on the other side and line them up. You might need to make this one bigger.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking4.png
Move the top into position (line up the middle with the lines of the insignias) and resize it so one side (I’ve started with the left) fits. You might need to move the insignias a bit so they completely enclose the top.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking6.png
Make sure you have the top selected. Now click the Mask button on the Transform tab, and then click the insignia on the left (or whichever side the top is sized to fit). You should now see that half the top disappears.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking7.png
What has happened is that you have masked the top to the insignia. This means that only the parts of the top which are inside the insignia are visible. You can move it around if it’s not quite in the right position.
Now make a second top. You will notice that this one isn’t masked – yet. Resize it so it fits the other side of the body, and mask it to the other insignia. Make the final adjustments so the top looks right, and then you can make the insignias completely transparent and send them to the back out of the way.
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/HeroMachine%20Tutorials/masking8.png
I’ve left them in here, but if I was using this for a real character, this is the stage where I would get them out of the way so I could work on the arms.

    There you go! Finished!

thx now i can practice on thathttp://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/legacy/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif

Glad to know my tutorials are helping someone. http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/legacy/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif
Guys, I’d really like to know if you find these tutorials useful, or if you have another tutorial you’d like me to make. Let me know!

One thing about that family photo bugs me – according to my chart of adult to child proportions, the kids are roughly 10, 5, 6 and <1, based on height relative to their parents, but based on facial and head-to-body proportions, the younger three look like they should be older than that. What age are they meant to be?http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/legacy/forum-smileys/sf-confused.gif

Eldest to youngest, 8, 7, 6, and 1 1/2 or so. The eldest girl is going to grow up to be a very tall woman. The other two will be more average height. I never was completely satisfied with the youngest two children’s faces. For the boy I started with the child head on the first page of “Winners” and tried to match the proportions of the features to it, although I think the kid the head was drawn from is several years older.

Is that chart handily available online somewhere?

    Here it is:
    proportions.jpg

You might also find the other two attachments useful. They’re growth charts for boys and girls, showing averages and 95th percentiles, etc.

    Wot, no comments? Okay…

Kairulan Facts of the Week #5:
    Atlantis: dead or alive?

This is (mostly) idle speculation. I’ve stated on my wiki that the elves come from Atlantis, and they’re descended from the survivors of the flood that caused it to sink. However, not all of them made it, and I’ve been wondering what happened to the ones who were left behind when the portal closed. One idea, which I like a lot, is that the magic crystals changed them somehow so they could survive underwater, turning them into a new species, or possibly the Mer. Your thoughts?

    …Okay, so that failed. Sorry.

Kairulan Facts of the Week #4:
Like cats and dogs…or wolves and vampires

Dragons and lupi get on very well, being so closely related, but neither of them get on at all with vampires. This is probably because their blood is much more attractive to vampires than human blood, and also a lot more powerful. Dragon blood, in fact, gives a vampire so much power that drinking it is illegal under vampire law, and is punishable by death – as is turning a lupus or a dragon into a vampire. This is, again, because of the massive amount of power such a being would have. They are also usually mentally unstable, and much more prone to losing control and going on a killing spree than other lupi or vampires. Because of this, a vampire-lupus or vampire-dragon hybrid will be killed as soon as possible by any of the three groups.

However, it’s not all bad: these problems don’t come up very often, mainly because of geography. Kairula has three continents, and the dragons and lupi mainly live on the western continent, with most vampires sticking to the east. As a result, the only interaction between them tends to be through phones and video conferences, which run no risk of anyone getting attacked.

Yes! You’ve got it! Laugh A lot of the changes happening in Kairula, for example the near-extinction of the dragons, are a direct result of the rapidly growing human presence in the last 1500 years – which isn’t that long in planetary terms, when you consider that the elves have existed since 10 000 BC!

Also, the wiki is kind of meant to be from a human perspective, so it makes sense that it’s all about the humans. I’ve been thinking of “non humans’ interactions with each other” as a possible future subject for Facts of the Week – which I’ve just remembered were due yesterday. Oh well. Maybe I should switch the day to Saturday or Sunday anyway.

Watch this space – the next Facts of the Week will be arriving sometime in the next 32 hours. Beyond that, I make no promises.

    I’m a catholic.

    Nobody’s perfect…

As a moderator I feel compelled to say that Heromachine does not endorse only one faith. Other religions are available.http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/legacy/forum-smileys/sf-wink.gif

Perhaps I should note that I was once a Catholic too. So – that was not meant as judgement or discrimination from my side. The only two things about religion I’m gonna say are:
    1. Nobody should try to force his beliefs on others and respect it if they don’t share those beliefs.
    2. You don’t need a church (or any other organised religion) to believe in a higher power – whatever that may be…

    ’nuff said! http://www.heromachine.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

It’s for times like these I wish the forums had a “like” or “upvote” button for comments. Cool

Lovely! The only way that could possibly be improved is if we could see the full body, but it’s great as it is. Thanks for entering! Cool
