FolklyParticipantI know this isn’t what you’re after, but I have to say, poses or no poses those pictures are excellent! They have so much detail and Anna’s expression goes so well with her pose. (I struggle with faces in HM myself.)
If you’re new to this then you’ve learnt how to get the best out of it very fast. You’ll probably get the hang of posing characters equally fast with a bit of trial and error. There are threads with examples of unusual poses in various places on this forum – there are some in “How Do I?” (within the Art Gallery section), and in other parts of the Art Gallery section too. I found that trying to copy those, and then dressing them differently to make my own figures, helped me a lot.
Edit: Oh, and I’ve just found this thread: http://www.heromachine.com/forums/topic/articulated-man-by-sean-david-ross/ That not only has some good examples, but also explains in detail how he arrived at them.
FolklyParticipantNot sure if you were planning to do any more of this, but I like it so far! The joining ritual is an imaginative idea (and unlike me, you can actually carry it through in writing… sigh… Shut up, Folkly, of course you can’t write, you never practice).
FolklyParticipantHey, I’ve read one of those. “The Sorcerer in the North”, it was – our local library service has a strange habit of buying a series and then scattering the books around the different library branches, and this time our branch got the fifth book! You’ve reminded me that I meant to try and find the others. I love fantasy, especially the kind set in the real world or something recognisably like it (I’m not so much for the heavy sword-and-sorcery stuff where everyone’s called things like P’tahk and Uioeou). Big kid, I know.
I’ve just re-read “Life, the Universe and Everything” (the 3rd Hitchhiker’s Guide book). Whew – I’ve been playing Star Trek Online and not much else for so long that I forgot what a real outer-space yarn is supposed to be like. That man’s got twice as much imagination as most of STO, and 100 times the LAUGHS!
FolklyParticipantThanks Camruth. As luck would have it, that’s just in time to be just right for what I’m working on right now – in fact, I’ll stop now before I steal most of Donatella’s outfit as well! Very nice job with all those five by the way. Did you know the Creators’ Club poster is doing suits this year? You should be good at that!
FolklyParticipantWow – miles of characters. I’d give suggestions but I can’t think of any way to do those last ones better than you already have! Except maybe white light instead of yellow on Adapto – looks kind of sickly against the purple, but then, I’ve seen plenty of official comic book characters do it that way, so it’s in keeping with the Golden Age theme. (Maybe the lights change depending what his powers are, anyway? That could be fun.) I see you got the hang of glowing effects – I love doing those myself, you get such a fine effect with them when they work. Especially if you hit on a particularly good combination of light colour with background colour.
I wish you’d post the code for some of these (Redbow and Taifun, especially): their faces seem to come out much better than the ones I do, and I’d like to see what you’re using.
FolklyParticipantWelcome to the forum! Beautiful picture, I like that a lot.
FolklyParticipantOops… forgot about this forum for ages. I’ve just tried clearing the cache, on both browsers (at least, I think that’s what I did on IE9 – I’m not used to it and it has one of those don’t-worry-your-pretty-little-head-about-the-technicalities interfaces, but I cleared everything I could find). I’ve also tried disabling all the extensions that will disable, although in fact there haven’t been any new ones that I know of since the time it was working. No luck. It puzzles me because it sounds like one of those issues to me, too, now you mention it – given that it worked once for each and then stopped working. Oh well. I can host them somewhere else. Thanks for the effort.
FolklyParticipantGreat, now Internet Explorer 9 doesn’t want to do it either! Any idea what could be causing each browser to do it the first few times, but then stop working?
@Kaldath said:I have had the best experience with the forums using Google Chrome.
Using Chrome is aiding and abetting criminals. I avoid Google’s programs like the plague anyway, they’re just so darn invasive. Google Toolbar was installed on my laptop when I bought it – three years later there are still bits of it caught in the system, they don’t seem to understand the word “uninstall” so I had to delete it by hand. And every bit of the empire is constantly trying to refer you to the others, as if I needed anything else to confuse me about the computer…
FolklyParticipantForgot all about this, sorry for long delay. I did do a Roman soldier a few days ago, in fact, all the while wondering why Magnus Maximus of all people needed someone else to draw a Roman soldier for him – then realised that mentioning that he “carried himself like a soldier” implies that he ISN’T in armour! Here’s my new attempt. (I haven’t posted the one in armour because I forgot to back up my Flash cookie that one time and the computer ate it.)
If this continues, I’ve noticed that we could really do with a top that hangs in folds at the hem, like it would be if it was worn under armour or a belt: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armored_general_Glyptothek_Munich_527.jpg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ancient_Times,_Roman._-_017_-_Costumes_of_All_Nations_%281882%29.JPG (bottom left) Really looks much more convincing. Also, are there any sandals? I can’t find them. Thanks for the magician, always helps to see how someone else might go at it! I used it this time, in fact, to see how to shade faces.
Maybe you’d have a better chance if you post more than one character at a time?
FolklyParticipantWhoops, didn’t think of that, thanks. What Internet Explorer 9 does is: when I drag a picture file into the box, the browser displays the picture instead of the forum. However when I click on “Add Files”, that does work. So that’s one way to do it, if somewhat long-winded. Wonder what’s the matter with it?
FolklyParticipantTops MaleSpandex: Blame my dad for this one. I was just innocently trying to copy a superhero costume somebody had posted, and I’d got as far as this
when I hear from behind me, “Hey, it’s a tortoise”. Which is true. And one thing kind of led to another. So, more nature notes to go with the wondrous eyebrow creatures.
FolklyParticipantI’m running Windows Vista. Mine is at:
C:UsersUsual accountAppDataRoamingMacromediaFlash Player#SharedObjectsZ8Z8Z526www.heromachine.comhm3heromachine3.swfhmcharacters.solSo you might be able to track yours down by following something like that. (The only bit of it that looks as if it might vary arbitrarily is “Z8Z8Z526”, and that was actually the only folder within “#SharedObjects” so it wouldn’t be hard to identify.) I found that address using a Firefox add-on called BetterPrivacy, which can list all the Flash cookies on the computer and their file path, and allows me to set which ones I want to keep and automatically delete all the others at the end of the session. I’ve set it to always keep all Flash cookies from heromachine.com, but for some reason they sometimes disappear all the same, so I’ve had to learn pretty quickly how to save the file elsewhere!
FolklyParticipantThese are good. Can’t quite believe you’re new to this. I like the Pazurians – you’ve somehow got a really bat-like face on them, too; you seem to be picking up HeroMachine lateral thinking fast, faster than me, I think. Maybe I’ll get there.
Superion’s hair looks weird somehow, like it’s made of plastic. I don’t know, maybe it’s the flat colour or it’s too symmetrical. I can see how it might be tricky to make him look “perfect” enough without him looking fake, though, and you’ve nailed it on the rest of the picture. And Captain Wonder isn’t actually wearing a ring on either picture, if it matters. Those are the only two possible tips I can think of among the whole lot!
FolklyParticipantSorry about that. That text string seems to have gone completely kersplat – I was having connection trouble while I was posting it, so maybe that did it – and I forgot to save a backup and my computer has now eaten the original, but luckily I still have the image file. I’ve hosted it elsewhere and used an tag, but can you remind me exactly how to do an attachment, please? It still won’t do it and I’m thinking I must be doing something wrong, and it’s a very handy feature. That background is one of the Rooms with a patterned rectangle over the top covering up the windows, by the way – the rest is pretty straightforward.
FolklyParticipantThank you very much! Glad to know I’m doing something right. I’ll take you up on that offer if I may…
Magician, circa “The Worlds of Chrestomanci”. Unfortunately the forum doesn’t seem to want to upload pictures tonight, but here’s the text.

50I only did him just now for practice, so play about as much as you like, obviously no hurry. I’m just keen to see anything you might think of to do with this – I’m still finding out just what things are possible with HeroMachine.
