Christi SParticipantThanx! The self-portrait is actually what got me to start thinking of shading with the gradient backgrounds as able to be more nuanced than simply ‘ad lighting’ or ‘make 2d character 3d’, n I’ve been trying to do more with it since so I’m glad its showing through! ^_^
Christi SParticipantAh, well thanx for both the edification and the compliment, Keric! N lol, I’m really not so squeamish anymore, I’ve just never taken the time to go back n re-watch it.
Its ‘an’, Herr D; silent consonants don’t count towards that particular grammatical rule. And yeah hahah… I myself took a look at my piece n was like; ‘there’s not enough sand in that hourglass for her to be in any kind of actual danger’. But I got lazy so left it.
Not sure about the copy/pasting text issue. I don’t have any trouble doing so. It could be because this site isn’t behind an SSL certificate and, depending on what browser/security you’re using, it doesn’t trust it to access your clipboard as a result? Maybe check the log on your browser and/or security and manually greenlight it for the future? Just hazarding a guess though. Could be way off.
Anywho, here are yall’s items! (with text in-image this time, because I finally learned fonts)
Just as a refresher, I will be judging the entries by the same criteria/scoring system as the last time I did this:
1. Composition: The overall quality of the style/technique used in the piece. 2 points!
2. Element Composition: How well the items were used/fit in to the piece. 3 points!
3. Creativity: How well the items were MISUSED in the piece. 3 points!
4. Aesthetics: Which piece I think just has the better overall finished product. 1 point!
Christi SParticipantEntry for CDC 310
I’m calling it “Penance Labor”
Christi SParticipantIndiana Jones? Yeah, if your’e right, I was never gonna get that lol. I watched Indiana Jones just once when I was in like 5th grade and spent the whole movie preemptively trying to hide my eyes (but low-key, so no one noticed) because I’d been told someone’s heart got ripped out in a gruesome way at some point in the movie >_< (turns out that was actually in one of the sequels or something? Iunno)
I’m a bit less squeamish now tho so I can actually appreciate your piece Keric =P Its very cool, if more than a lil creepy/disturbing lol
Also… Pick? Vote? Whahahappen??
Christi SParticipantAnother entry for One Part, Many Characters! Yall should really join in on that one; its a lot of fun! 8D
Christi SParticipantAnd this is me jumping in again!
For the extra half-point: My guess is Aladdin & Jasmine! And there’s a tower silhouetted against the moon out one of the windows.
For my entry: I did the scene that made me think Aladdin lol
For my pieces: I did it musical chairs style! I used the snake as sand, the sand as fire, and the fire as the snake! =P
Christi SParticipantDecided I aughta have an avatar, at this point!
Ended up snowballing into actually being probly my most ambitious project to date. I thought “why not try n make it look kinda like me?” which turned into “why not try n make it really look like me?” which turned into “lets see what exactly the limitations are on HM as far as producing photo-realistic art” lol.
Soooo… ended u spending like 2 hours with a reference photo trying to get the shading just right. Think my vanity may have gotten the better of me though, because the finished product looks about 10x prettier and about 10 years younger than I do >_>
Christi SParticipantBeen away from HM for a bit (life got kinda hectic this new year) so here’s an update:
Thanx for the explanations on the power user/etc. phenom.
TYSM to everyone who nominated/voted for my piece in Hall of Fame! <3
@Lull-carae: Omg, wow, such a detailed response! Thanx a bundle for the feedback and encouragement! Right there with you on shadows n darkness, btw; I adore those in pieces. Tryna make sure I don’t become the Zack Snyder of HM, cuz everytime I do a redesign it seems to come out darker, both literally and metaphorically lolAaaaand, new pieces:

Christi SParticipantHeyall, sorry for the disappearing act! 2017 did not arrive quietly for me lol
But things should be calming down now (I think/hope) so Ima try n jump into this again soonish! ^_^
Christi SParticipantOh. Wow. Duh. I’m an idiot for missing that play on words lol.
Are there any calendars that come out at any other time of year, btw tho..? =P
But yeah, Kittendales Calendars are a play on “Chipendales”; buncha pics of hunky guys… but posing with adorable kittens! Its a cat shelter/adoption charity thing lol. “Dan” just has that sorta male-model look to me, plus the aptly-named “adorables”, just made me think of it.
Christi SParticipantWB Randall! I was crackin up at the whole “army of geeks” bit XD
Anywho, here’s my submission:
A farming community in one of the most volatile climates in the world, the villagers of Tybb gathered in the chapel every morning for sunrise worship. There they would pray to the butterfly deity Ry, believed to have the power to turn back even tornadoes and lightning, to protect their crops from the inclement elements.
Used the mouth and top for the butterfly, and the ear for the tornadoes.
Christi SParticipantHahah, d’aw thats too excellent Keric!
I have to ask tho, because its the first thing I thought when I saw it… was this piece inspired by the Kittendales Calendars?
Christi SParticipantAlrighty, well, days comin to a close and it doesn’t look like we’re getting any late entries so… TO THE JUDGMENT! XD
Composition:
– Keric: I really like the layered way the scene is done, and how everything was made to fit into the setting of some sci-fi planet with, I have to assume, either odd geological chemistry or light gravity! 2/2!
– Herr D: I love the perspective and angles in the piece, as well as the motion it captures really well. I do however feel like a couple components came off slightly awkward, like the torso and wrist. 1/2!
Element Composition:
– Keric: All the pieces fit really well into the scene. Its just very cohesive. 3/3!
– Herr D: The background piece and eyes are used flawlessly, but I feel like the gun, either because of the dimensions or colors, stands out and seems kind of cartoony in the context. 2/3!
Creativity:
– Keric: I’m impressed by the “forcefield generators”, even without changing the piece significantly; I definitely don’t see “gun”. And the eye crab is equal parts cute and creepy, but I would have liked to see it incorporated into something more than being an element unto itself. The background, while it works very well compositionally, was not repurposed. 1/3!
– Herr D: I absolutely ADORE the painting and pallet uses, and I’d NEVER have tagged the hair if you hand’t pointed it out! And while the “blowdryer” is a bit awkward aesthetically, its still a super clever used of the piece that I for one wouldn’t have thought of! 3/3!
Aesthetics:
– They’re both really nice, fun, well-constructed, pieces, but I think I have to give this point to Herr D. The perspective, as well as all the little details (the scalp stubble, the tag sticking out of the collar, the paint stains on the brush handle) just really complete the picture for me.
Total:
– Keric: 6
– Herr D: 7
Herr takes it by a hair! =P
Christi SParticipantWow, thanx you guys! I wasn’t sure I was totally happy with the result on that last piece, but yall’s responses are super encouraging!
Seriously tho… WTF is a Power User!?! lmao
And if yall think its really Hall of Fame worthy… am I sposed to do sumthin? Submit it somewhere or sumthin?
@Herr D: It was 96 layers
