And ty Vengeance! NGL, kinda proud of this one.

    @ams
: Just a hobby. But I spent much of my childhood planning on growing up to be an artist. Round the time puberty hit, I decided I really liked THINGS (like having my bills paid on time) though lol

Good catch on the hands! I thought they weren’t fitting quite right but couldn’t figure out the issue; I’ll have to try maybe some transparency on those finger highlights… when I’m feeling very patient because yes, I left the patterns for last before so it wasn’t an issue, but FOSHO it will take FOREVER to do any edits with them on there now lmao

ALSO… latest entry for One Part, Many Characters: “Rook”

Just to shake things up, thought I’d actually do a superhero submission for once lol

    I call him “Rook”:

Shoulder is the soles of his boots, blade item is his belt, and blunt item is his ship.

Alrighty, it is the 15th! To the judgment!

    1. Composition: The overall quality of the style/technique used in the piece. 2 points!
    – Keric: Everything fits really well; definitely looks like a music video. The only thing that feels a little off is the perspective; maybe if the floor panels got smaller more rapidly? Or if the sizing/positioning of the figures was a bit more linear?
    1/2
    – Herr D: Love the sense of motion in the image; you always seem to capture that well. And the shadows are fantastic! Love the glint on the blade too! I would have liked to see some more gradients of gray and/or simply more colors though; right now it feels like the foreground is much more 3-dimensional than the background. The way the paper seems to bisect her arm, going behind the forearm but in front of the bicep is a bit awkward as well.
    1/2

    2. Element Composition: How well the items were used/fit in to the piece. 3 points!
    – Keric: No complaints here whatsoever. Everything fits perfectly with the image; just looks very natural to the picture and not at all shoe-horned in.
    3/3
    – Herr D: The tower and the ruffles are awesome! Really great usage! And I definitely like the train as the machine, but the perspective doesn’t quite fit with the straight-on angle of the rest of the image. Maybe if you’d masked it as two different pieces and done the front part somewhat wider than the back?
    2/3

    3. Creativity: How well the items were MISUSED in the piece. 3 points!
    – Keric: The tower as the fez is AMAZEBALLS hahah! I really adore that; looks great! The train and ruffles look good too, but weren’t really re-purposed.
    1/3
    – Herr D: Here too, I feel like the tower was the best misused. It fits so well with the second train piece and really looks like a turning device; again, great implied motion. The ruffles as reams of paper are also super smooth and flawless and a great idea I wouldn’t have thought of personally. Once again, though I like the intent with the train, I just feel like it came across kind of awkward.
    2/3

    4. Aesthetics: Which piece I think just has the better overall finished product. 1 point!
Both pieces communicate their story/setting very well, the expression in Herr D’s is especially fitting, but I’m going to have to give this point to Keric as I actually found myself trying to google Strange Train because I totally thought this was a homage to a real music video or album cover lmao!

    Final Score:
    Keric: 6
    Herr D: 5

Keric takes it by 1! Pick your items!

That looks really good! I like how you made the highlights pretty subtle (transparency? Or just color?); it gives it a very natural, traditionally-drawn look which I think fits really well for an old school fantasy game character. And the glints on the armor are perfect!

As for the face; I would do a highlight along the middle of the nose running up to the middle of the forehead between the horns, two more diagonally on the cheeks from the outside corners of the eyes down to just before the sides of the nostrils, and one on the chin right inside where its outlined on that head. MAYBE a highlight between the mouth and nose, and shading along the inside jawline detail lines on that head just below the cheek highlights, but the head is pretty small on that piece so that might be too much.

Now that I’ve learned the value of reference pics, I wanted to try a more complicated pose. I also wanted to do a piece using the coloring/shading style I used in “Penance Labor”, but more so.

Calling it “Primaries” because of the color scheme.

    “Primaries”

The very first thing I did was find a good reference photo for the kind of pose I wanted to do: https://s1.postimg.org/rnh9h51vz/ab9e965c.jpg

TO start off, I got all of the elements positioned in the right location and on the right layer (for the most part).

Then I cleaned up the pose by masking onto insignia shapes.

For a more 3D coloring effect, a positioned gradient backgrounds over their costumes, using the line details of the body items to help figure out placement.

Then I colored in the pose pieces with the darkest color of the gradient circles they were behind (all one color; primary, secondary, and line color) and made some of the colors for some of the gradients transparent, so they’d blend together better.

Repeated the previous two steps for the rest of the coloring, except I actually masked the gradients on here to keep the shape of the heads as well as show hair details. Didn’t like the way the hair was looking on the man (tried several colors/transparencies) so I just made it entirely invisible and added a pattern to act as his hair.

To finish the piece, I added some highlighting and shading to their faces as well as patterns on their costumes and the woman’s hair. Then I hid the masking shapes, added a background, and called it good to go! For now least, might tinker with it more later.

Still working up the courage to try n start the next issue over from scratch.

In the meantime, here are some simple mock-ups of the characters I’ll be introducing in the coming issues:

@JR19759: TY! I’ve been trying to figure out how to do a piece from this angle for a min; ended up using reference pics which I linked here: http://www.heromachine.com/forums/topic/just-my-machinings/page/3/#post-143202

@Suleman: Thanx so much! Believe it or not, this was actually a fairly simple pose, though a lot of masking was involved in fitting the clothes to it; you can see the basics of how I did it here: http://www.heromachine.com/forums/topic/show-your-work-progress-of-a-design/#post-143197

As with the portrait, reference pics really helped. I’ve been wanting/trying to do a piece with this perspective for a while but couldn’t seem to figure out how w/out it looking awkward until I googled “aerial view of woman”. These two stock photos made figuring out the placement/proportions a lot clearer:

I’ve had my eye on this thread for a while; actually picked up some good tips from yall!

So, seeins I finally have a piece I saved frequently enough to SHOW my progress, thought I’d do a post!

Started off with the base pose, using insignia shapes to mask a couple items:

Then added clothes/accessories/details, using a LOT of masking:

    Next I colored Everything:

    Then added gradient patterns:

    Added shading and highlights:

For finished product: hid the masking shapes and finished the scene with a couple accessories and a shadow.

@Anarchangel: Using a reference pic REALLY helped; its hard to visualize the way light hits a face!

    Also… entry for CDC 312
“Uber Bane” (I didn’t pick the name lol)

Edit: The inspiration for this character, generated from my name on http://superhero.namegeneratorfun.com/ :

Oh, thats too bad! I totally would have read that article; people who do the RLSH thing are kinda fascinating to me, just like the mindset behind it. Mostly just using them in this to integrate the setting with real-world events, but still.
