The Praetorian Guard was all but disbanded by the time of the death of Gottfried IV, who found them to be superfluous. Their numbers were bolstered enormously by Gottfried V, especially during his later, more paranoid, years. At the hight of their power their numbers reached 25,000. Despite these efforts the Guard was destroyed not much later, defending the Imperial Palace of Westminster.
