But first I have to finish the last 12 (probably even 14) members of the All-Americans, which could prove to be difficult since I lack any inspiration for Connecticut and Vermont. Unlike all the other states it seems like I can’t find anything special about them to work with on a superhero – no good nicknames or legends I’m aware of, nothing. Maybe one of you has a suggestion for these two states – or at least a few useful links (other than wikipedia) with informations? I would really appreciate your help here …
How about this?

I love Bugeater, but any hero from Nebraska would have red in his/her costume.Okay – here’s a red version just for you. What do you think – does it work?
Perfect. As for Connecticut, what about “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court?” Vermont has the “Green Mountain Boys” from the American Revolution.

http://www.50states.com/facts/conn.htm#.Ue0dcNLVD_AThanks – actually I already knew that link, but the only somewhat usable thing (for a superhero idea) in there was the “pumpkin-heads”. But that may be a little too far-fetched since it’s an very very old expression. Don’t think that’s still used …
@The Atomic Punk said:As for Connecticut, what about “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court?”
Yeah I thought of the Yankee approach too – especially since Mark Twain lived there until his death. But everything I see when I try to imagine a Yankee is a loudmouthed fat man in bermuda shorts and hawaii shirt with a camera around his neck and a beer stein in his hand. Guess I’m damaged by too many american tourists visiting bavarian castles and the Oktoberfest.
Another prominent Connecticuter would be Samuel Colt, inventor of the first working firearm with a rotating cylinder, generally known as a revolver. Not sure how that could be used though…
Vermont has the “Green Mountain Boys” from the American Revolution.
Hmm, I don’t know – not very much potential there for a superhero, I think. I read a lot about Vermont (like about all 50 states) but that didn’t help me lot – the only exceptionel thing about Vermont was in my eyes, that Montpelier is the only U.S. state capital without a McDonalds. And of course that Vermont was the birthplace of the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy – but nothing of that really screams “superhero” to me …
But all in all that’s a good start with those suggestions – keep them coming…

Mad JackParticipantFrom New Haven, Connecticut – The Constitution State – FIGHTING YANK (II):
Carter Farwell was a high school history teacher in New Haven who one day gave his students the task to create their family tree. This lead him to research his own ancestry and on the search for documents he found an old trunk with the inscription “Bruce Carter – 1778” in the attic of his grandmothers house. When he opened it, he discovered an age-old cloak and a same-aged tri-corner along with a slighty younger-appearing mask and a diary with the label “Bruce Carter III – The Fighting Yank – 1941-1971”. As he couriously grabbed the diary, his hand touched the old cloak and it began to glow in the half-dark attic. At the same moment the ghosts of two man appeared in front of him.
Frightened to death by the apparition Carter ran screaming to the hatch to the attic, but stumbled just before his goal, fell down the steep ladder and fell hard to the floor in the hall below, where he eventually lost consciousness. When he woke up several hours later he found himself in his own bed, unaware how he got there. On the bench at the foot of his bed he found the cape and the hat from the trunk together with the diary.
Although he was prepared for the apparition when he touched the cloak this time, he let out a silent scream when the ghosts actually appeared again. The two aethereal men hovered in the air in front of Carter and stared at him with glowing eyes. When asked who they were, they replied that they were his grandfather and his great-grandfather, and that their spirits were condemned to restlessness by their failure to complete their respective missions. But if they could help their descendant – Carter Farwell – to fulfill his own destiny, there would be hope of salvation for them.Inspired by the heroic acts of his grandfathers Bruce Carter and Bruce Carter III, and with the tutoring of their ghosts, the young Connecticuter high school history teacher Carter Farewell picked up the haunted cloak of his ancestors and accepted the challenge to use his heritage to become the new Fighting Yank and to serve his country his own way. Worked into his own mordernized costume the cloak grants Carter superhuman strength and invulnerability, along with the ability to channel the spirits of his ancestors into himself, thus becoming even more stronger, faster, and almost immortal.
From Cedar Rapids, Iowa – The CYCLONE State:
Possesses the ability to manipulate the wind and create high-velocity winds about himself. He is able to summon cyclones and whirlwinds with speed and force sufficient enough to allow him to lift and propel himself through the air at fantastic speeds and rotate his body around its lengthwise axis as fast as 400 revolutions per minute, while still being able to speak, hear, and see his environment. He can focus the created air currents into a jet stream powerful enough to lift others, blast a hole through a brick wall and even tear down buildings.
From Chicago, Illinois – Home of the Chicago Outfit – THE UNTOUCHABLE:
Working a case against the then boss of the Chicago Outfit, former police detective Elliott Earp became a vigilante, when a bunch of corrupt cops tried to take him out and left him for dead. Taking advantage of the belief that he was dead, Earp went underground and spent years traveling the world, training himself to intellectual and physical perfection, deepen his variety of crime-fighting skills, including chemistry, criminology, forensics, and learning martial arts, gymnastics, disguise, and escape artistry. When he finally returned to chicago he built himself a secret new identity as the “Untouchable” – a merciless and ruthless crimefighter who swore an oath to rid the city of all evil. Although he has no superhuman powers, he is one of the world’s smartest men and greatest fighters. His physical prowess and technical ingenuity make him an incredibly dangerous opponent.
From Tulsa, Oklahoma – The SOONER State:
Existing in three time periods (past, present and future) within 30 minutes at the same time and only loosely anchored to the present, he can see what will happen in fifteen minutes and change the events leading to that specific future be “jumping” back 15 minutes to the past through concentration. Through the constant manipulation of his own quantum state he is also able to switch between alternate timelines and parallel dimensions at will. Fun fact: he hates spoilers…
From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – The Steel City – US STEEL (The first industry-sponsored superhero):
He has the ability to convert the tissue of his entire body at will into an organic steel-like substance that appears to be analogous to carbon steel and remain in that form for an indefinite period of time. In his armored state he possesses a normal degree of mobility and his strength is increased to the point that he is able to lift over 100 tons easily. Also, while in armored form, he can physically exert himself at peak capacity for several days and become invulnerable to most forms of bodily harm. He is capable of withstanding ballistic penetration and a collision with a fully loaded, ten-ton flatbed truck at 100 miles per hour, surviving extremes of temperature from 70 degrees above absolute zero (-390 degrees Fahrenheit) to approximately 9000 degrees Fahrenheit and falls from great heights, and even resisting an explosion of 4500 pounds of TNT to his face.
From Richmond, Virginia – The CAVALIER State:
On a horseback ride with his favorite stallion “Black Fury” the Cavalier had a freak accident that made him a modern centaur. When a glowing meteorite hit the rider and his horse in a park, the two were unexpectedly merged into one being. Studying the “meteorite”, he discovered that it was in fact a highly sophisticated machine that was able to fuse any organic matter with another one. Over time he learned to control the machine, allowing him to transform back and forth at will. As the Calvalier he has the full horsepower of his pet and the intelligence of a human being – along with those (aristocratic) manners…
From Point Pleasant, West Virginia – Home of the legendary MOTHMAN:
Gifted with precognition the Mothman emerges at places of future disasters or crimes to warn the people or to help them fight supernatural events and other bizarre phenomena. No wonder he’s considered to be the infamous creature from the legends himself. But in fact he’s “just” a mutated human with wings, precognitive abilities and heatvision. No cryptid here… *um* … I think.

Mad JackParticipantPS: After reading my own post before the last I hope I didn’t alienate anyone with my remarks about Yankees and Vermont – didn’t mean any harm, I was just kidding around…
August 4, 2013 at 5:27 pm #29195
Mad JackParticipantSo here’s the rest of the bunch …
From Baltimore, Maryland – The MONUMENTal State:
Monument is capable of growing to a maximum of twohundred (200) feet high trough rapid acquisition of bodily mass from an yet unknown source, whereby the extra mass fortifies all of his cellular tissue, including his bones and muscles, enabling him to support his increased weight, and giving him superhuman strength. In the picture he limited his growth to “just” sixty (60) feet which he preferes since growing to more gigantic sizes is both physically and mental very demanding, but a natural neurological reflex prevents him from growing beyond the limits of his body endurance anyway.
From New York, New York – The MELTing Pot:
Melt(er) can increase the temperature of either his entire body or just any part of it at will and is able to generate intense levels of heat, up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. In this temporarily state he can melt most conventional materials, including stone and some types of metals, and cause severe burns with a single touch.
From Portland, Oregon – The HARDCASE State:
The former Marine was a victim of a bomb explosion on his third tour in Afghanistan in which he lost both arms and legs and great parts of his body were severely damaged. Dependent on a life support system and already a bit suicidal he agreed to an experimental medical procedure, in which large parts of his damaged body were replaced with cybernetic prosthetics and bionic transplants. Although it is difficult even for him to say where the man ends and the machine begins, he has drawn new hope and uses his new won powers for the good of his fellow men. As a cyborg his robotic bodyparts are mainly composed of nanites, allowing him to transform or expend his limbs, adapt technology and weapons appropriate for the present situation or opponent, and control machines as well as computers.
From Burlington, Vermont – The State with the motto FREEDOM & UNITY:
These two heroes are identical twins with the ability to merge both their bodies into one single large creature that combines and multiplies their individual powers. Freedom possesses increaded speed, strength and invulnerability whereas Unity has vast telepathic and telekinetic abilities.
Normally the transformation goes quick and easy, but sometimes it can be corrupted through outside forces like energy attacks. If that happens they can get stuck “inbetween†for days or even weeks…
From Milwaukee, Wisconsin – The BADGER State:
Badgers senses of sight, smell and hearing are superhumanly acute and comparable to those possessed by certain animals. He can see things at very great distances and with perfect clarity even in near-total darkness and his sense of hearing is similarly enhanced, allowing him to hear sounds that ordinary humans can’t. He can use his highly developed sense of smell to track or recognize someone by their scent, even if it has been covered up or eroded over time. Also his agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete and each of his fingers are tipped with retractable claws that are razor sharp and capable of rending substances as durable as flesh, bone, wood, stone, and even some types of metals.
… and 2 bonus characters:
From Washington, DC – The District also known as DMV:
When the owner of a small business in Washington committed suicide after being driven to ruin through the dark machinations of politicians and lobbyists, his son vow revenge and became a dark merciless vigilante who not just fights the crime on the streets, but also hunts down everyone who abuses his power or tramples on the rights of the litte guy on Main Street. Described as a “disillusioned merciless vigilante” by a journalist he adopted that name willingly in its abbreviation “DMV” which also stands for his area of operation: DC, Maryland, Virginia…
From Salinas, Puerto Rico – The SHINING STAR of the Caribbean:
He possesses the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it from almost any part of his body to a wide variety of effects such as for flight at great heights and speeds by directing it as a downward thrust or shooting plasma in the form of blasts that causes objects to shatter, explode, or seemingly disintegrate. He can also manifest his energy as an impenetrable and virtually indestructible personal shield, which absorbs outside kinetic impact into his own energy supply and then can be re-channeled to increase the bludgeoning power of his blows or to create explosive shock waves upon impact.
I hope you enjoyed the ride as much as I did …

JeimuzuParticipantShining Star looks really cool, I love all the glowing aura around him.
August 4, 2013 at 5:48 pm #29200
VampyristParticipantBadger’s costume is great, monument’s holding of the villain is a great touch, and freedom and unity’s corrupted version is horrifying. These fifty plus two have been great, I have to applaud your creativity and dedication.
August 5, 2013 at 1:26 pm #29268
Mad JackParticipantCheers pals! Now, before I take off to create international heroes I wanna give you a quick review over the last 50+2 with this little groupshot with the heroes arranged according to the location of their states of origin on the map:
August 5, 2013 at 1:33 pm #29269
JR19759KeymasterThat’s a “little” groupshot?
My faves are Shining Star, Spirit Of America (obv), Rough Rider, Swamp Man and North Star, to name only a few.August 6, 2013 at 10:15 am #29333
Blue BlazerParticipantLoving your All-Americans. I’m working on a virtually identical idea, called The Fifty. When I finish them all we should have a 100 character BATTLE ROYALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Second Civil War
August 6, 2013 at 12:38 pm #29344
Mad JackParticipantHa! Bring it on!!! (And thx for the compliment – alway appreciated.)
August 11, 2013 at 1:49 pm #29573
Mad JackParticipantSo, here are my first international heroes – I decided to make it a team building exercise. Here’s the team from China:
Zìyóu Zhà nshì (自由战士) – The Freedom Warriors
The team members from left to right and front to back:
TAIJI (tà ijà – 太極)
“Tà ijÔ means “the Absolute or Supreme Ultimate, the source of all things“.
Taiji has incredible control over his chi (qì) and can manipulate it to create and project powerful dark (yīn) and light (yáng) energies for a number of purposes and effects such as healing or wounding peoples with his touch, summon darkness or create brightness, focus his chi to increase his strength (active) or his endurance (passive) and much more.
LONG XIN (lóng xÄ«n – 龙心)
“Lóng XÄ«n” means “Dragon Heart“.
Long Xin has the ability to absorb solar and other radiation to generate plasma temperatures reaching about 1,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit at maximum level. He can not turn himself into plasma but is immune to fire of all kind and capable of projecting the flames he generates as powerful blasts with such high accuracy that he can give a person either a tanning like they have been sunbathing all day or total incinerate his target.
MONKEY KING aka Sun Wukong (SÅ«n WùkÅng – å«æ‚Ÿç©º )
SÅ«n WùkÅng is a very well known character with supernatural powers in the novel “Journey to the West“.
Monkey King possesses various attributes associated with several simians. Those includes the strength of an adult gorilla, the fierceness of a chimpanzee and the agility, balance, and bodily coordination of a tree monkey. He also owns a wand that allows him to change his size and those of other objects at will and a glider on which he flies.
LAO SHU (lÇŽoshÇ” – è€é¼ )
“LÇŽo” means “old, aged, experienced” and “ShÇ”” means “rat or mouse“. So “LÇŽoshÇ”” can be interpreted as “experienced rat” even if it means literally also simply “rat or mouse“. But I prefer my own interpretation …
LAO SHU has minor telepathic abilities with which he can read minds and control smaller animals like rats and mice. His powers also includes the capability to establish a mental link between several persons which remains as a connection between those individuals for a few hours. Furthermore he can quickly absorb, process and store informations through mental transference by touch, effectively giving him the ability to take other peoples skills and knowledge (eg martial arts techniques, medical knowledge, etc.) he never learned himself and use them as they were his own.
HOU YI (Hòu Yì – åŽç¾¿)
Hòu Yì is a mythological chinese archer and worshipped as “god of archery“.
Hou Yi is a hyperkinetic with full control over body and mind, and has perfect precision with any aimed or thrown weapon/projectile. As a master archer he is capable of firing multiple arrows with his longbow at a single target in a few seconds, hitting multiple targets in a few quick strokes, and directly hit small targets in the greatest of distances with absolute accuracy.
YOU (优 – yÅu) & SHI (shì – 势) – YOUSHI (yÅushì – 优势)
“YÅu” means “excellent, superior“, “Shì” means “power, potential” and “YÅushì” means “superiority, dominance“.The identical twins You and Shi are both martial arts experts with enhanced strength and speed. Upon any physical impact with each other they create identical physical living duplicates of themselves with equal powers than those they have. Through this controlled process they can create multiple duplicates in an almost infinite number, whereby the duplicates themselves can likewise replicate multiple times. Each duplicate thinks, feels, and acts independently but disappears by spontaneous combustion after a varying time – depending on the amount of energy it consumes in action.
KUAFU (kuÄfù – 夸父)
“KuÄ” means “to boast, exaggerate” and “fù” means “father“. KuÄfù is the name of a mystical giant who hunted the sun.
The giant Kuafu makes up for his lack of intelligence by his sheer size, extreme power and great ferocity in battle. He is 13 feet tall, can lift well over 70 tons, and his skin is impervious to conventional blades as well as high caliber bullets and powerful energy blasts.

amsParticipantWow! You are a machine at Heromachine! Hey Blue, this guy’s going to give you a run for your money on total heroes pumped out. Love Monkey King. That’s a great pose! Cheers!
August 12, 2013 at 5:42 am #29603
Mad JackParticipantThanks buddy – that means a lot to me coming from you since I admire your work very much! But I have to give credit to Nug who inspired me to that pose with his “Creeper”.
And as for the “pumping out” heroes: What can I say? I’ve got too much free time, tons of ideas and inspiration, and nothing better do…
