Pop Quiz – “Two Wheels, No Waiting!”

tumblr_lq4eg9PgZR1qam0yp

On May 21st, 1819, 1819 - Bicycles were first seen in the U.S. in New York City. They were originally known as "swift walkers."

Your Pop Quiz challenge is to re-imagine this revolutionary mode of transportation as it might have looked in an alternative period in history. And just to be clear, the future is not a period in history. Maybe a caveman’s or a Pharaoh’s wheels intrigue you. Or perhaps Henry VIII’s bicycle is more your style.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

The winning entry will receive a custom costume/uniform design  for the bicycle's rider by yours truly. Not a remarkable prize, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image(like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

This contest will close at 6pm Eastern on Sunday, May 22nd.

Pop Quiz – Winner!

Please join me in congratulating HermanSmellville on a truly creative - and vaguely disgusting - entry. Well done and thanks to all who entered. See you in a week with a new quiz which will actually have a...gasp...prize.

Button It!

Hi all! Marx here, once and future contributing artist. It has been... Wow!It's been two-and-half years since my last post when I introduced a series of new suit coats. Apparently, I am still on a contemporary fashion kick because I'm back - this time with shirts.

I've found that HM simply does not offer enough button-down shirts that coordinate and layer well with other HM options. While there are plenty to choose from, either they don't fit with a coat over them, or with a neck tie, or tucked into pants, or untucked, or the sleeves were the wrong length, or the collar was too open, or not open enough.

So I put together a collection of 24 items that can be used to create pretty much any kind of contemporary button down shirt. You can mix and match any of these pieces. They conform to the standard body, so you can layer coats over them, or use them with pants either tucked in or untucked. They all use the same sleeves, so you can also customize the sleeve length and shape. And there a options for customizing the pocket(s).

Best of all, I created all 24 items for both male and female. You'll find these new items in Tops > MaleStandard and Tops > FemaleStandard. (As usual it's strongly recommended to clear your browser cache to see the new items - but be careful when doing so, since you could be loosing all your saved files. Better if you save those externally as text files beforehand.)

Yes, admittedly the collars should have gone in Neckwear, and the pockets in Insignia, and the epaulets etc. in Shoulders, and the cuffs in Gloves. But these items were all designed to work together, and so I felt it was worth while to group them all together.

Just to inspire you, I've put together a montage of various contemporary looks that you can assemble with these pieces. Hopefully, I got these out in time to see a few more in the first round of JR's Friday Night Fights.

Enjoy everyone. I'll post again in another year or two.

Submission Box: Extra Frames – Tracer and Pose Design 101

This video was submitted by Tuldabar to Jeff who then sent it to me to take a look at. I found it to be interesting and entertaining and while it focuses mostly on gaming animators the lessons within can be applied to us the HeroMachine community and our work on custom poses!

Tokyo Treat Box

Hey Guys and Gals,

I have recently signed up for the Tokyo Treat Subscription service, which is essential a box full of 5 to 7 candies or snack foods from Japan. My Subscription is the cheapest one offered by the way, Here is what I want to know, would you guys like me to review these boxes for you ? Tell you what is in the box along side of pictures, and what I, my room mate, and my best friend and his wife think of candies/snacks found inside ? If there is interest in this I might consider upgrading to a more expensive subscription for a large box each month. My first box is due within the next couple days, so let me know what you think of this idea.  If my friends consent I might even record it instead of doing photos.

Atomic Girl

atomicgirlI was indulging my latest weird past time this morning by watching other people play games (seriously, what's up with that?!) on Twitch.TV and came across a fun new streamer playing Fallout 4 (my other latest addiction) named Atomic Girl. She recognized the name and had very kind things to say about HeroMachine, which was both surprising and flattering!

It turns out she makes really cool dieselpunk and steampunk stuff, so if that's your jam check out her shop or visit her on Facebook.

Good luck with your Twitch career, Atomic Girl!

Creators Club Entries Closed (Again)

Hopefully for good this time.

Anyway, I'm no longer accepting entries for the Creators Club Poster for this year. If you haven't got your entry to me, that's too bad. Due to the circumstances, if/ when Stulte does get back to me I'll send over any entries I have to him so we can have a proper poster for this year with everyone in it. Otherwise, I'll try to have the poster up some time next week.

Thanks for your patience and co-operation with this, the situation wasn't ideal, but oh well.

Creators Club: Update

Hi guys, JR here.

Ok, so, quick run down on what's going on here. After the entries for the poster closed, Stulte (who was putting the poster together this year) and myself agreed on a timeframe for when the poster was to be finished and posted, which was to be the following week. Later that week Stulte emailed me and asked for an extension, as he wasn't able to work on the poster due to his not feeling well. I've since emailed him asking for an update and haven't yet received a reply. Now, as much as I don't want to have to do this, I feel it's unfair on you guys who entered stuff for this years poster if you don't get to see a poster, even if it's not the one originally intended, so at this point I'm going to take over putting the poster together.

Now, first problem with this is I don't have any of the entries, as they were all sent to Stulte. There are a few that have been posted on the forums and deviantart that I can get to easily but I think what would be best is for everyone to re-submit their entries (still within the original submission rules which I will post below). As I'm not asking for you to actually create a character this time I'm only going to give you guys a week to resubmit your entries, so next Tuesday (7th) is it.

The rules for submission are as follows:

1. Your entry must be in .png format. You must title it in standard contest entry style i.e. Username- Creators Club Poster (for example I would title mine JR19759- Creators Club Poster). Don’t screenshot the picture and send that in, export it as a .png please. If possible export it with a transparent background, because this makes putting the poster together easier.

2. You MUST include the text for your entry. Mandatory. This is incase Stulte needs to re-export any of the files in a bigger or smaller format. You can include it as an attachment in the email or just paste it into the email, but you have to have the text accessible.

3. Your email has to be titled something applicable to the Creators Club, so its easy to recognise as not-spam.

And if you could send it to me at jr19759@hotmail.co.uk

Sorry about this guys. At this point I want to get this done rather than have it sitting around not getting done. Thanks for the co-operation.

JR out.

Pop Quiz Winner!

While I loved Cliff's entry, I have to give the win to HerrD for his very creative, and fairly creepy, entry . Normally I can't handle clowns, but I love this guy!
