Electron Boy

I missed my "Things I Like" Saturday post, my apologies, but luckily "The Seattle Times" (via long time reader Ian on Facebook) published a story today that's a perfect blend of super heroes, the Make A Wish Foundation, and two of the guys from "Deadliest Catch", all three of which are Things I (very much!) Like.

Local boy with cancer turns into a superhero for a day

Erik Martin, who is living with liver cancer, has always wanted to be a superhero. On Thursday, the regional chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him that wish with an elaborate event that involved hundreds of volunteers in Bellevue and Seattle.

It's a great, heart-warming story that I think you'll really enjoy. Happy Weekend everyone!

Good show, sir!

I love fantasy and science-fiction books, and since I've been interested in art since I was a kid, I often spend more time than your average bear (or Hebert, for that matter) staring at the cover art. Which explains why I love "Good Show, Sir!" so much; they profile particularly obnoxious book jacket art with good-natured ribbing. Right up my alley, and hopefully yours too! Here's a quick sample of one from the first page that made me laugh:

Eron Comments: The third in this utterly original series. Which features “Magick” with the added “k” which must mean serious fantasy is about to be had! In addition, we get a phenomenal rendering of the back of some random knight and a severely constipated dragon trying desperately to crap himself in terror at the War of the Worlds spaceship blowing the hell our [sic] of it’s [sic] castle with a laser that comes from nowhere.

I've added it to my RSS feed and it's always good for a laugh or two on lazy weekends like these, when you should probably be outside but aren't.

The ABCs of super heroes

I spent time this last week checking out the fantastic illustrations of comics artist Chris Samnee. He was doing a more or less daily sketch routine that he felt was getting stale, so he started doing the letters of the alphabet rendered through super-heroes. The results are pretty awesome. He's up to "F" so far. Here's his "A" for instance:

Also, best buddy John Hartwell was inspired to offer a more up to date version of the Pendragon character I used as a Sketch of the Day recently as part of his own Sketch of the Week, this time in the classic Kirby style:

Great stuff Mr. Hartwell!

Things I Love: Awesomeness

Illustrator Neill Cameron has been putting together an "A to Z of Awesomeness". Each day he creates an illustration based on reader suggestions for each letter of the alphabet. For instance, here's his "M" entry, "Modok's Melancholy Mouseketeer Memories":

The illustrations themselves are great, and the subject matter is hilarious. I really like the idea and the execution both, hats off to him.

I've been trying to think for a while of some sort of collaborative effort like this, either where you all make suggestions for an illustration you'd want for the SOD, or somehow we make an illustration challenge for the day that you could work on either in HM or on your own. Any ideas?
