The winning entries for all HeroMachine contests.

Character Contest 47 Winners!

We had a ton of great entries for "Character Contest 47: Weather, weather, everywhere" that really blew my socks off, so thank you all for your creativity! Also, practically everyone got the direct-link url stuff right, which given how aggravating my Internet connection has been was a huge deal. So thanks for that, too!

And now, without further ado, let's get to your Finalists and overall Winner.

Character Contest 46 Winners!

I was really impressed with the entries for Character Contest 46 (Clerics), you all did an outstanding job. As a result, we have a lot of Finalists to go through, so I want to get right to it.

Before I do, though, we have some unfortunate business to address. I was unable to count the following entries due to bad links that went to a jump page instead of directly to the image:

  • GuyDiga: #127;
  • Mindless: #115;
  • Daniel England: #104, #77;
  • Asher: #79, #85;
  • FelipeSCard: #144;
  • Samurai Pineapple: #162, #158, #157

Remember, for ImageShack or PhotoBucket, you want the link listed in the "Direct Link" box over on the right or left, and NOT the URL from the address bar of your browser. I couldn't even get PicasaWeb to load this morning to tell you want link to use, but I think the way to do it there is to right-click on the image and use "Copy Image Location".

And now, on to our Finalists!

Character Contest 45 Winners!

Many thanks to everyone who entered Character Contest 45 - The Kirby Train. Before getting to the fun stuff, I have a bit of bad news to report -- the following entries were not considered for stated reasons. I feel particularly bad for those with multiple entries like kyle and venomfang666, but the state of my internet connection just doesn't allow me to process characters that are not directly downloadable from the link. In some cases, I could see from the name that the character wouldn't qualify, as they were supposed to be a color and a mode of transport.

The number in parenthesis is the comment number on the original thread.

  • Galactic Ketchup (9) - bad link
  • ajw (11) - not a mode of transport
  • DANIEL ENGLAND (12) Bad link, and "ding thing" has neither a color nor a mode of transport
  • Neon Sequitur (18) Bad link
  • kyle (36, 96, 138) - bad link (imageshack)
  • TJ (52) - bad link (photobucket)
  • Hanna (62) - bad link (imageshack)
  • Galahad (102, 104) - not a mode of transport
  • venomfang666 (109, 119, 121, 130) - bad link (photobucket)
  • abominal401 (110) - "Mystery Crimson" not a mode of transport
  • Grip (141) - no color ("Ice Skater" -- ice isn't a color)
  • Grip (148) - "Trance" is neither a color nor a mode of transport

Since most of these are bad links, here's how to get good ones.

Most of the time the bad link is from copying the URL in the address bar of your browser, but that won't work for right-clicking on the link and saving the image directly because it usually has some other bits of data in it for you, the image creator, that no one else can use. If it has something like "?action=rotate" in the address, then it's useless to me.

PhotoBucket: PhotoBucket puts a big giant box over on the left side of the image screen labeled "Share this image". You want the link in the "Direct Link" box. That goes directly to your image without all the other PhotoBucket crap loading around it.

ImageShack: ImageShack has a set of boxes on the right side of the image viewer screen. In the one called "Links to Share This Image", you want the one labeled "Direct".

Those are the two major culprits, hopefully that will help for next time; I'm sorry I wasn't able to use your entries this week.

Now that we have the unpleasant bits out of the way, on to the happy news!

Character Contest 44 Winner FINAL

Congratulations to Morzan for winning the run-off for Character Contest 44! Morzan can choose either a "Sketch of the Day" subject (like the recent Ms. Marvel one for the Pop Quiz), or any item or portrait to appear in HeroMachine 3.

And once again, thanks to everyone who entered, to the other Finalists, and to Me, Myself, and I and Blue Blazer for their hard-fought vote as well.

Character Contest 44 – Nature Winners

We had a huge response for Character Contest 44 - Nature, thank you all so much for the inspiring work you put into this! I had a tough time deciding on an overall winner out of the many Finalists that all had something special about them. So without further ado, here they all are, with comments on why I thought each deserved to be in the mix for the win.

If you don't see yours here, it's not that it wasn't good, I just had a lot of great ones and could only pick a handful. So keep trying, I know I speak for everyone else when I say it's a lot of fun seeing each other's work each week.

Caption Contest 84 Winner!

The winner of Caption Contest 84 is ... Larkin!

Other entries I thought particularly amusing were:

  • Gargoyle323: “Starfruit gives me the weirdest gas!”
  • Gargoyle323: “No matter how hard I try,I just can’t make exclamation and question marks pop up. All I get are these lame stars.”
  • Gargoyle323: “Supergirl… Wonder Woman… Black Canary… No, I get stuck being Farting Star Girl!”
  • Dudemeister: I’ll tell you what that smell is – it’s what happens when 99 cent bean burritos meet a twenty dollar bill.

Apparently I was in a Gargoyley mood.

Congratulations to Larkin, who wins his or her choice of any item, or a portrait, to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 release.

Pop Quiz 1 Winner!

Thanks to all of you who played along on this most excellent Sunday of American style smash-mouth NFL football with the "Design a Fantasy Sports Logo" Pop Quiz Contest! My fantasy team (the Gotham Dark Knights) did fairly well, and has an 11 point lead heading into Monday night's game, where my fantasy opponent has the San Francisco defense going up against my own Frank Gore. My hopes of crushing his hopes and dreams remain high, which makes me a gleeful little bald man.

There were some very funny entries, including a few team names I wish I'd thought of. To wit, I thought the Bizarro Spectators, Barsoom Jeddaks, Lorien Arrows, Boston Stranglers, and the Latverian Doombots were all fantastic teams. I might have to expand my fantasy outings next year so I can steal ... er, borrow ... one of those titles, they're just great.

When it came to the actual logos, there were severral that I thought were pretty good from Gargoyle323, Atomic Punk, Blue Blazer, Jack Zelger, and Myro:

Just like with the Kurgan, though, there can be only one, and definitely my favorite both for the team name and the actual logo illustration was Myro's "Latverian Doombots":

I love that cute little Doom hood and face on the heraldic body, that's awesome. I could totally see that on a helmet or jersey. Hell, I'd probably buy one!

So congratulations to Myro! Let me know what you'd like for your custom black and white character sketch -- what character and what they should be doing -- and I'll put it on The List.

And thanks to all who entered, this was fun! It made for a good distraction while Peyton Manning was ripping my heart out in the first half. All those weapons and he just HAS to throw touchdowns to the two guys on my fantasy opponent's team. Jerk.

Character Contest 43 Winner!

Without further ado, I present first the Finalists, then the overall winner, of Caption Contest 43 - Laborer!
