The winning entries for all HeroMachine contests.

Caption Contest 100 Winners!

We got some great submissions for the centennial edition of the Caption Contest, so a hearty THANK YOU to everyone who entered! I got some good laughs out of them, starting the week out on a perfect note.

With great pleasure, therefore, I present your Finalists, the ones I thought were the funniest or cleverest:

  • Joel: “Oh wait, it’s not? Sorry, could someone please tell me how I can get to Tokyo, sorry.”
  • nakiato: This is the last time i travel though Arizona without my birth certificate !
  • ajw: Extinct my ass!
  • Mr.Chris: “Seriously. I just ate a blowpop, what color is my tongue?”
  • HairWhip: “I’m the Hunchback of NotreDIE!!!!!!!!!!”
  • Ian Thomas Healy: “I asked my doctor about Celebrex, and look at me now!”
  • X-stacy: You can’t shoot me! I’m endangered!
  • Malfar: Everybody stand still, I dropped a lens!
  • Hunter-Hunted: “I put the ‘DIe’ in ‘DInosaur’!”
  • Hunter-Hunted: “Opposable thumbs, Baby! Now how do you like that??”
  • Patriot_Missile: Fin! Fang! BOOOOM!!
  • Knighthawk: I’m a Tyrannosaurs Rex, I CAN’T put my hands on top of my head!
  • frankie: “Vait! Don’t shoot. It’s me, Hitler.”
  • JWTx: Say hello to my little arms!

Those are all strong contenders, but like Highlander there can be only one. And so without chopping off anyone's head with a samurai sword, I hereby choose as your overall winner ... Knighthawk!

As the centennial winner, Knighthawk will receive a custom black and white character sketch of one of their creations. Congratulations!

Character Contest 65 Finalists!

We had a ton of great entries for Character Contest 65 - Gemini, so many thanks to everyone for their awesome submissions!

As usual, I've picked out some of the ones I considered the very best, or the funniest, or that simply have some feature that I thought exceptional enough to bring to your attention.

If yours isn't listed here, that doesn't mean it wasn't good, it just means that in the opinion of one Internet blowhard (i.e. me), it wasn't quite up to the level of some of the others for one reason or another.

And now, your Finalists!

Caption Contest 99 Winner!

The last double-digit Caption Contest was a tough one, I grant you:

I wanted to pick entries that were funny (obviously!), but that also a) accounted for the truly bizarre elements in the panel and b) fit the dialog balloons. With those criteria in mind, I am proud to present the entries that I thought were The Best:

Joshua:

Man: It figures! Only I would bring a pig to a gunfight!
Woman: Ham-fisted idiot!

Gargoyle323:

Man:”Another crime solved by detectives Pork and Beans!”
Woman:”Rats!”

dblade:

Man: Sweetie, I’m not one to tell you how to do your job but there might be a more efficient method of butchering.
Woman: Now who's the trained chef here? LAUNCH!

Steve M.:

Man: “Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig, does whatever a Spider-Pig does…”
Woman: “NOT THAT SONG AGAIN!!!”

Blue Blazer:

Man: You can’t spell “slaughterhouse” without “laughter”!
Woman: What does that even mean?

Sutter_Kaine:

Man: Why, you were hiding under the pig the whole time!
Woman: It was the one place I thought you’d never look.

Dan:

Man : “I thought you said you wanted me to throw around the old pigskin?”
Woman : I mean a football you idiot!”

Kountkill:

Man: “There’s got to be a easier way to tenderize meat.”
Woman: “Just keep swinging”

I also liked abominal401's "This little piggy went SMASH!" but he didn't provide any dialog for the woman's balloon. Even an exclamation point (as suggested by another reader) would have nailed it, but alas.

Regardless, the one that I thought did the best job of captioning off this truly random panel was by ... Gargoyle323!

I would totally want to watch a TV series about detectives Pork & Beans. It's gotta be better than at least half of the current crop of cop shows.

Congratulations to all our Finalists and especially to Gargoyle323, who I'm happy to see back after a long illness. Let me know what you'd like as your prize!

Character Contest 64 Winners!

Thank you to everyone who participated in Character Contest 64, which asked you to come up with prospective new members for DC Comics' "Legion of Super Heroes" (or its alternate group, the"Legion of Substitute Heroes"). I had a lot of fun reading and viewing the submissions; the Legion was arguably my favorite comic growing up (along with Green Lantern and The Flash) and this was a welcome walk down memory lane.

I do unfortunately have to take a quick moment for some housekeeping duties: Alphaalpharomeo, Dan, directawesome, Jordan_Xord, Yurasagi, and MrMatt220 all posted links that went to jump pages rather than directly to the image itself. In the future that may disqualify your submissions, so please post better, direct links in the future. In PhotoBucket, there's a box over to the right that specifically says "Direct Link" -- that's the one you want. In Picasaweb, right-click on the image and use "Copy Image URL" from the flyout menu. Thanks -- it makes downloading these much easier and faster for me.

Now, with that out of the way, on to the many wonderful Finalists!

Caption Contest 98 Winners!

Many thanks to everyone who entered Caption Contest 98! There were a ton of really funny entries this week, as you can see from the large number of Finalists. Maybe it was how silly the panel was:

Without further ado, here are the aforementioned Finalists!

Character Contest 63 Winners!

Many thanks to everyone who submitted an entry for the Taurus contest. I appreciate both your creativity and your willingness to share it.

I've selected a few illustrations that for various reasons caught my eye. I wanted to start with an update of Mark's GI-Joe ripoff team, the "Zodiac Commandos" with their newest member and the latest group shot since they're sort of the inspiration for the whole Zodiac Contest campaign:

Caption Contest 97 Winner!

Caption Contest 97 was probably the toughest one yet in terms of how hard it was to come up with an appropriate caption. The addition of the pre-set dialog ups the sphincter factor by at least two. Still, a number of folks came up with some high-quality entries:

  1. Rendu: “I’m sorry, darling- there’s no wite-out left for YOUR speech balloon.”
  2. Blue Blazer: I hate redundant questions. Even in the office.
  3. Sutter_Kaine: Please stop saying “Even in the office?”.
  4. Hairwhip: I dont know why, but everytime you say “Even in the office?” I want to kiss you even more.
  5. frankie: “I think we need to end our inter-office relationship.”
  6. Myro: “You know what I’m tired of? ‘That’s what she said’ jokes.”

Proving I'm an idiot, I never even thought about the TV show, yet in retrospect that was obviously the way to go. Which is why, despite still not having claimed a prize for his Caption Contest 94 win (ahem!), the prize this time goes once again to ... Patrick!

Well done, Patrick! Let me know in comments or via email what you'd like as a prize for this contest and your other outstanding prize and I'll get 'em on the list.

Character Contest 62 Winners!

The votes are in, the polls are closed, and we have our winners for Character Contest 62! The new Male Fantasy Warrior Template will be by xXBladeXIIXxx, and the new Female Fantasy Warrior Template will be by Sean David Ross! Congratulations to both of them, and further to all of the Finalists. It was a close vote at the end.

I'll need to get the text save strings from both of those chaps; in the event I don't get them in the next two weeks, I'll have to switch to the second-place Finalist.

Full results and images after the jump.

Character Contest 62 – Female Finalists

The response to Character Contest 62, which challenged you to create a template available to everyone who uses HeroMachine 3 for a Fantasy Warrior, was huge. My sincere thanks to everyone who entered, I am once again humbled by your creativity and skill.

I've broken the results into two sections, male and female. I went through and picked out my favorites, limiting it to one entry per person in the interest of fairness even though there were some who had two or more I thought were outstanding. I ended up disqualifying any that had the arms in a non-standard position (that was one of the contest requirements this time around).

But hey, I've done the hard part, now you get to do the even harder part of picking a winner! After I show you all of the Finalists, I'll have a poll where you can vote for up to five (5) entries you think would be great templates to show to new users as a starting point. Polls close at 8 am Mountain Time on Wednesday when the entry with the highest total number of votes will win.

You can use whatever criteria you like for voting, of course, but as for me, here's how I looked at the initial entries:

  1. Is it awesome to look at?
  2. Is it relatively easy to duplicate or pick apart so the newbie can figure out how to do it on their own?
  3. Does it say "Fantasy Warrior" to me when I look at it?

Without further fanfare, I present the many Finalists for the Female Fantasy Warrior template for the first half of Character Contest 62:

I've broken the results into two sections, male and female. Card, Scorpidius, Sutter Kaine, and several others) who had two or more I thought were outstanding. I ended up disqualifying any that had the arms in a non-standard position (that was one of the contest requirements this time around), and although I picked out several Templars initially (PyroDude760, Myro, and a few others), I ended up leaving them off at the end because they were all just too similar.
