Happy Halloween! In honor of my favorite holiday of the year, I thought I’d look at something in tune with the season. In gaming, there are a great many horror games, but even non-horror games can have scary or creepy moments. So let’s pay tribute to some of those today. Remember, I’m talking non-horror games, so no Resident Evil, no Silent Hill, no Dead Space, nothing like that. I’ve also left off Bioshock, as while not exclusively a horror game, has a lot of the same elements of one (man, getting down to Rapture and having a splicer scream and claw trying to get at you in your bathysphere… eep.). Some spoilers, too, as I can’t really talk about stuff that happens in-game without them. I’m not limiting myself to one per game, either, as some games have multiple instances of creepiness.

So a new trailer for Rogue One dropped a couple of days ago. Instead of reviewing the trailer itself (because what can I say, it looks awesome!) So, as the gritty reboot of our childhoods continue, we have now gotten our first trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers movie. And…. here it is:
We all remember the TV shows we watched and loved as kids. As adults we grumble about the ‘quality of kids’ shows these days’, but what about the ones we remember so fondly? They may hold a place in our hearts and in our nostalgias, but what happens when you re-watch some of those shows now? Well, thanks to DVD release and streaming options like Netflix, this task is simpler than ever. So, with that in mind, I thought I would go back and look at some of these and give my thoughts on how they’ve aged, or at least how they fare through adult eyes. So first up is the one that we’ve actually been watching a lot of lately, Digimon: Digital Monsters (or Digimon Adventure). I’m talking only about Season/Series 1 here, because that’s the one I remember watching. To be fair, it’s a season of 54 episodes, so there’s plenty to talk about.

The moment I saw the title I knew I’d have to save my original topic about revisiting a childhood TV show to see how it fared now, and talk about this instead. Hey everyone, I wanted to talk to you today about something a bit more serious. In terms of mainstream acceptance and sheer scale of dissemination through popular culture, it has never been a better time to carry the title of ‘nerd’ or ‘geek’. If you look at the films with the highest grossing openings, not only are the top three spots held by geek culture movies (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and The Avengers) but in fact the top thirteen places are held by films within the genre, only interrupted by Furious 7. You can walk into any Target, Spencer’s even Wal-Mart and easily find a plethora of clothing, accessories, and collectibles to proudly proclaim your love of all things geeky. Conventions are huge and plentiful, with cons like E3, the New York Toy Fair, and San Diego Comic Con becoming entities unto themselves as places of premiere news, trailers, and announcements to both geek and mainstream media. We made it guys, widespread acceptance!

Ah, September. Kids are back to school, it’s cooler in the mornings, and people like myself are already three months into Halloween planning. But now is that time that people also look back and reflect on the summer movie run for the year. So let’s take a look at a sample of what this year had to offer from May-August. Now, my list is a bit short, and will be missing some obvious entries. We live pretty far from the closest theater so we don’t get a chance to see everything.
