Poll Position: Who Is The Best Robin

So, we've now had two polls focusing on classic DC characters who've had more than one person take up the mantel, both with fairly predictable results if we're being honest. And so to complete the trilogy, this week we're looking at what I'm expecting to be the most predictable of the lot. And it's rather topical, considering the subject of this weeks What Were They Thinking?. So for this weeks poll we want to know who you guys think was the best incarnation of Batman's most famous side-kick. We're only counting those who have taken the name in mainstream DC continuity, so no multiverse, elseworlds or possible future versions.

What Were They Thinking?: Detective Comics Comics Inc. vs. Rihanna

Now as we are discussing a legal issue today on What Were They Thinking (the place where we look at all of the stupidest and most ill advised things in all of comics history), I've had my legal team (comprising of Phoenix Wright and Detective Pikachu) look over everything to see that it's all in order, and they say it's ok, so we should be good. Now Detective Comics Comics Incorperated (to use their government name) have had a lot of strange and amusing incidents in the court room. They've been sued by Batman (that is, the city in Turkey; Batman) and of course, sued every other comics company in existence back in the 40's/ 50's if they had a character who was even remotely similar to Superman, but then forgot to bother when the Silver Age picked up. And then, back in 1979, they collaborated with Marvel to procure a joint trademark over the word "superhero", but only when it applies to comics, magazines, cardboard stand-up figures, playing cards, paper iron-on transfers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, pencils, notebooks, stamp albums and costumes (and not TV, Film, Books or Video Games, which is weird, as these are where the two make a fair chunk of their money from now). Now this one is most pertinent to what we're going to be talking about today, as we're going to be looking at DC's reaction to someone else trying to trademark a common use word. What is also pertinent is this picture.

So, last week I asked you guys to come up with the best possible replacement dialogue for this, the greatest panel in all of comic book history:

And in time honoured tradition, here are your final five.

The List: Top 10 Doctor Who Episodes Since 2005

So, as we don't have a poll to work from for this weeks list it looks like we're back to random JR's opinions based lists, which is fun. So, Doctor Who. A television institution since the 60's, al-be-it with a break in the late 90's/ early 2000's, the show has seen its popularity sky rocket since it was re-launched in 2005, to heights possibly even greater than its peak in the 70's. Adopting an episodic approach, as opposed to the serialised format used during the original run, the show has managed to craft some truly fantastic stories within 45 minutes (or 90 minutes in the case of two-part episodes). But which is the best episode? Well, might as well right? Of course, these are just my opinions, if you have your own, good for you. One ground rule before we get started, I'm counting two-parters as a single episode, as it's just a single story stretched out over a longer period of time.

First, honourable mentions. I've got enough honourable mentions to make this a top 20 list, but it already takes me long enough to write these when they're 10's and I'm not feeling great at the moment, so I'm just gonna chuck them all in as Honourable Mentions. So yeah: The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances (S1E9/10), Rise Of The Cybermen/ The Age Of Steel (S2E5/6), The Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit (S2E8/9), Partners In Crime (S4E1), The Stolen Earth/ Journey's End (S4E12/13), The Time Of Angels/ Flesh And Stone (S5E4/5), The Rebel Flesh/ The Almost People (S6E5/6), A Good Man Goes To War (S6E7), Hide (S7E9), The Day Of The Doctor (50th Anniversary Special)

Poll Position: Who Is The Best Green Lantern

So, following on from last weeks poll, where we looked at who the best Flash was, this week we're looking at another DC icon that was reinvented from the Golden Age to the Silver Age and then numerous times since, Green Lantern. You can choose who your favourite is from all of the human characters to have held the title of Green Lantern in DC continuity. We are not counting any of the alien characters who are part of the Green Lantern Corps, just the humans who own green power rings.

What Were They Thinking?: Marvel’s Rebirth Problem

HEATH AND SAFETY WARNING: THIS WEEKS WWTT CONTAINS "ART" BY ROB LIEFELD. PLEASE TAKE ALL NESSESCARY HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE READING. THANK YOU.

You know, doing a reboot isn't always a bad thing. DC successfully did it back in the 50's, taking the names of established characters from the 40's and changing their origins and personalities to create new characters and boom, Silver Age of comics. I mean, ok, they have now officially over-egged that omelette after the 18 trillionth time they've rebooted their universe, but still the original idea of taking the name "The Flash" and having it be a guy called Barry Allen rather than Jay Garrick was possibly the best in comic book history, maybe after the idea of putting Superman in bright red underwear over a blue one-piece. But, that's DC, what about Marvel. They aren't exactly known for their reboots are they. Whilst DC was creating all new characters from old ones, Marvel just slotted the new characters in alongside the old. So, they never needed to do a big reboot right? Yes, that's true, but this is What Were They Thinking (the place where we look at the stupidest most ill-advised things in all of comic book history), so of course, they did it anyway and what did we get? We got this...

Rob Liefeld cannot art.

Caption Contest #86

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week you have to replace all of the dialogue for this panel, I'm sure you all knew this was coming:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (Feb 1st) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

The List: Top 10 Best X-Men Team Members

So, the X-Men. Charles Xavier's School For Higher Learning and it's team of Uncanny mutants has seen a fair few members since its inception in the early 60's (near 100 at last count and that's if you don't include honorary members or members of sub-/ splinter teams that never made it to the main team), but that's only fair considering that to qualify you only have to be born a mutant, which skips around the whole origin story thing. Of course, as with any series with a large cast of characters there are some members that are good, some that are bad and then there's Beak. But today, we're only focusing on the good ones, specifically the 10 X-Men that you voted as the top 10 Best in the team's history.

Honourable Mentions: Beast (Dr. Hank McCoy), Psylocke (Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock), Iceman (Bobby Drake)

Poll Position: Who Is The Best Flash

This week we're going to do something a bit different than usual on poll position. Rather than doing a poll that will lead to a list, we're just going to have a self contained poll. No suggestions, no list. Now the reason why is simple. There are many famous instances in comics of a hero taking up the mantel of another hero (Sam Wilson taking up the Captain America role from Steve Rogers for example). However, there are only three examples of this happening where more than one character was given the opportunity to not only make a mark on the role but to make it their own. And probably the most famous of those three is The Flash. So this week, I want to know who, in your opinion, is the best of the 4 men to have taken up the mantel of the Scarlet Speedster.
