Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (Aug 30th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Character Design Challenge #334: Minions

Hey guys, JR here. I'm filling i for djuby for a bit on the CDC's whilst he's in hospital (you can find more info on that here if need be).

Anyway, your challenge for this week is to create your own disposable personal army of faceless grunts, goons and/ or other non-specified subordinates that any prospective super-villain could use as cannon fodder the next thime a superhero shows up to foil their evil scheme for world domination. Your minions can be human, alien or robotic (though preferably not small, yellow or tic-tac shaped for obvious reasons).

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13: full or partial nudity is prohibited. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackDeviantArt, or whatever - Please do not use Photobucket);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). *

This contest will close on Sunday, August 27th at 9:00am Eastern.

What Were They Thinking?: What is it good for?

There are some storylines that are good despite having some really stupid things in, we covered that last week. And we've covered on numerous occassions storylines that are just bad here on What Were They Thinking, because we tend to look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in comic book history. But what about storylines that could have actually been good, but the stupid things dragged it down too much? Well, let's take a look at the big one shall we...

Caption Contest #100 Results

Last week, I asked you guys to come up with the best caption you could for this iconic comic book image:

And the top 5 are:

The Atomic Punk: What happens when you switch car insurance.

HerrD: Smallville Traffic Department had some more issues this week.

gjc6664: BREAKING NEWS: Alien steals car

Treasure Hunter: That's the last time Jimmy will ask, "Are we there yet?"

Calvary Red: And so begins a long career of solving problems through violence.

But, unfortunately, there can only be one winner. It was very tough to even choose a top 5, even tougher to choose which was best, but in the end the winner had to be...

What Were They Thinking?: Weird, but not Bad (Iranian Edition)

Usually, here on What Were They Thinking? we look at some really bad or misguided storylines, hence why I always say it's the place where we look at the stupidest and most ill-advised things in comic book history. But this week, we're going to look at a storyline that actually is a certified classic, or at least a hugely important storyline with many excellent qualities, that has one of the oddest story tangents when you consider why it is so famous. That story would be this:

Caption Contest #100

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week, I want you to come up with the best caption you can for this iconic image:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (Aug 16th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Who Is The Best Batman Villain?*

So, I've had something I've been wondering for a while now and I thought I might as well put the question to the community. You see, when it comes to discussing the best Batman villain, there's always one single answer. Joker. And that answer is probably right. He's the guy who's been around the longest, is the most recognisable and has done the most to hurt the Dark Knight out of any of his numerous enemies. But just saying Joker is the best does hurt the discussion of what is The greatest rogues gallery in any medium (comics, film, TV, video games, books you name it). So what I want to do is pose the question, who is the best Batman villain (not including Joker)? Think of it as we're deciding the number 2 spot as it were. I've put together a fairly comprehensive list of the Dark Knight's greatest enemies and I want you guys to tell me who is best.

You can add your own entries, but I'm not accepting any villains who are famous for fighting Batman but were originally villains for other characters (e.g. Soloman Grundy, who was originally a Green Lantern villain, or Deathstroke, who started out as a Teen Titans villain and is generally more of a Justice League adversary more than anything). You can vote for your top 10 once a day over the next week.

What Were They Thinking?: Finger gets Kane’d

When it comes to great comic book characters, their creation is invariably a team effort. None of Stan Lee's Marvellous menagerie would be as popular as they are today without the contributions of Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko and there would be no Superman without both Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. But why exactly are we bringing the creation of classic characters up on What Were They Thinking?, the place where we look at all of the stupidest and most ill-advised things in comic book history. Well, there is one comic book character with a dark side to their creation and it is less ill-adivsed and stupid as it is confusing and downright deceitful in places. I am, of course, talking about na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na this guy:

Caption Contest #99 Results

Last week I asked you guys to come up with the best replacement dialogue for this panel:

And our top 5 are:

MLS: Firestar is hopeless in the kitchen and Iceman still isn’t back with the beer. ‘Amazing Friends’ my ass!

The Atomic Punk: Oh yeah, MJ is gonna kiss this cook!

Rekulhs Nathe: I’m just like Walter White

Delanie kartheiser: My cooking is so great even the smoke alarms cheering me on

HerrD: . . . two cups flour, one egg, one fire extinguisher? What?

But, of course, there can only be one winner and this week that winner is...

What Were They Thinking?: Crisis Identified

We've covered a lot of bad storylines here on What Were They Thinking?. That's only natural, seen as this is the place where we look at all of the stupidest and most ill-advised things in comics history. But we've never covered a storyline that has been refered to as "the comic that ruined comics". Now what storyline could have recieved such a negative accolade? Perhaps it was something from the 90's, like The Death Of Superman, which ironicly killed off the concept of death in comics. Or maybe it could be refering to One More Day, the Spider-Man storyline that more closely resembles excrement than Fearful Symmetry. Or maybe it is refering to something like Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns or Crisis On Infinite Earths, which are absolute classic storylines but had a negative impact on the direction the industry would take as a result. Well, actually it's none of those. We are in fact taking a look at this:
