Character Design Contest #336 Results

There weren't a lot of entries to this weeks contest, which I can't say was much of a suprise, the remit was unusual and quite strict. However, that didn't stiffle the entry quality, as all 5 entries are worthy of winning. Christi S's entry had probably the best realistic water effect and I especially liked how she did the rocks breaking the surface of the water. But I also have to give credit to both GJC6664 and Madison for their use of a "paint-brush" effect to achieve their water. Out of the two I'd say GJC's effect is better and less overwhelming for the picture as a whole, though Madison does get points for being the only person to attempt a foreground character. Then we have SprocketSauce's entry which utilises light, darkness and colour mixing alongside some interesting item usage to create an excellent scene. And finally we have HerrD, who also used some unusual item usage to create his sea creatures (sponges, coral, sea slugs and the like) which is something none of the others attempted.

However, despite this being a very hard descision, we do have a winner. It was close, but in the end I have to give the win to SprocketSauce and his entry DEEP DIVE.

What Were They Thinking?: Not Very Fantastic

Here on What Were They Thinking we look at all of the stupidest and most ill-advised things in all of comic book history. However, this week we're going to be looking at something that, in all fairness, actually does make a decent amount of sense, if only purely from a business perspective. But the fact that it makes business sense does not exclude it from being a WWTT target, simply because the spitefulness and meanspiritedness of the descision means that, as always, the only people who lose out are the fans. And of course, when we're talking spiteful and meanspirited, you know we're talking about these guys right?

Caption Contest #102

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week you have to come up with the best caption you possibly can for this panel:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (Sept 13th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Character Design Challenge #336: It’s the sea, you see

Ok guys, this week I want you to create the best aquatic scene you can. The only required elements are a background with a water effect (it does not matter how you achieve this, so long as it is in heromachine) and some sort of foreground aquatic item (e.g. coral, shipwreck, fish etc.). You can include a character/ characters or it can just be a landscape, so long as you include the two required elements.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13: full or partial nudity is prohibited. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackDeviantArt, or whatever - Please do not use Photobucket);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). *

This contest will close on Sunday, September 10th at 9:00am Eastern.

What Were They Thinking?: The ULTIMATE What?

So, the 90's were weird right? Rob Liefeld was a ig thing and that should tell you everything you need to know. But you know what was the weirdest thing that happened in the 90's? Well, we here at What Were They Thinking? (the place where we look at all of the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comic book history) think that we have found it:

This guy got his own comic series:

What Were They Thinking?: Absolutely Nothing

So, last week here on What Were They Thinking? (the place where we look at all the stupidest, most ill-advised things in comic book history) we took a look at Marvel's 2006 Event, Civil War. We looked at it as an example of a storyline that had all the ingrediants to be a classic but was heavily let down by the execution, to such an extent that it is still considered one of Marvel's most divisive comics ever. So what do we think happened when they decided to do a sequel?
