Glorious

With it being Independence Day in the US (celebrating the anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, rebelling against the authority of Great Britain), I thought I'd take a look at one of the worst "patriotic" super-hero outfits for Bad Costume Wednesday.

You can see an amazing collection of such characters at Comic Book Resources, but I've settled on Captain Glory by Jack Kirby:

Movie Wolverine vs. Movie Batman. Who wins?

Since Wolverine wins every poll he's in, and Batman wins every poll HE's in, I am going to short-circuit the geek hive mind and pit them against each other. Genius!

To make it more interesting, I'm going with the movie versions of each, particularly since I think an argument can be made that the X-Men and Nolan Batman series are fundamentally compatible in a way that, for instance, neither is with the world of the Superman films.

So you've got the standard Wolverine ferocity and healing powers against the Batman's strategic superiority and tech base. Both are trained in martial arts and both are deadly fighters. Batman is used to fighting guys with swords, so if he survives the first slice-and-dice that shows his armor to be ineffectual, I think he could adapt and stay away from the sharp ends.

I don't think either character is the combat master they're portrayed as in the comics. With Wolverine, I get the sense that he's more of a Rocky style "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" sort of outlast-them fighter. More of a pugilist than a martial artist. Batman, of course, very much is the martial artist, but does that matter much against a guy who can regenerate?

I see the fight as being either a quick Wolverine victory (his unexpected speed and ferocity, not to mention unstoppable claws, catch Bats before he can prepare), or Batman survives the initial assault and picks him apart over the long term.

What do you think, who would win and why?

Caption Contest 124

Your challenge this week is to come up with the best replacement dialog for this comics panel (which comes to us courtesy of the always awesome Glenn3's "Say What?" PhotoBucket site):

The best entry (as judged by yours truly) wins the author's choice of either any item they like or any portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3′s final release, or a custom black and white “Sketch of the Day” style illustration (you pick the subject, I draw it however I like).

All entries must be left as a comment (or comments) to this post. Keep ‘em clean (appropriate for a late-night broadcast TV show), but most importantly, keep ‘em funny!

No limit to entries, but please, self-edit and only put up ones you genuinely think are good!

Character Contest 94 Results!

I accidentally named this Character Contest 93 in the original post, but it's actually number 94. Oops! Math is clearly not my strong suit.

We had some great entries, and though we had quite a few nice illustrations disqualified due to improper linking (all I got was download.html) or file naming, I'm happy with our group of Finalists. Speaking of which, here they are!

Pop Quiz 16 Results

I have to say, the latest Pop Quiz (featuring the teddy bear item) might be my favorite one ever. You all outdid yourselves, putting together some truly inspired creations. I'm going to post every one (at least, the ones that were posted properly) below with a few comments on each.

Pop Quiz: Ted!

Happy Saturday, folks! In honor of the release of the movie "Ted", your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

Make an image using this cute little guy!

You can dress him up, put him in someone else's hand, or make him a giant Godzilla like destroyer, but this item (from ItemRight-Miscellaneous, page 6, second row) has to be somewhere in the image. One tip, you can manually type in a percentage in the Scale box that's larger than 200 to resize it much larger.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner either tonight or tomorrow morning. Elaborate backgrounds aren't necessary, though if you've got one it's fine.

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the HeroMachine Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). Here's a quick-start guide on how to do that for various image hosting services.

The winner will receive their choice of either one item or one portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 release, or one Sketch of the Day style drawing where you pick the subject and I draw it how I like.

Good luck!

Those Dartmouth boys know how to party!
