WeilynMemberI’ve been creating a lot of dwarves lately, and have been experimenting a lot with body item sizes. Now I’ve come up with a system that has worked pretty great for me. Figured I might as well post it. Maybe it will be of help to somebody.
(Dwarf companion included for scale.)February 6, 2013 at 5:26 pm #18829
JmanoramaMemberHow are you doing the items, gear, hair etc. Are you just modifying them on size based on position on the body?
I really wish he’d just bring back the dwarf body from 2.5. No offense, yours just looks a bit squished and doesn’t look as clean as the 2.5 body did. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very much going to use your system and I appreciate you posting this.February 6, 2013 at 6:18 pm #18833

KaldathKeymasterAnd here is a second attempt after some fiddling
February 6, 2013 at 7:43 pm #18836
amsParticipantHope you don’t mind, Kaldath, but I tinkered with your first pic to throw my 2 cents in. I think the trick is to keep the head, hands and feet regular proportions and adjust more of the torso and limbs to a shorten size. What do you think?

Prof.AnthraxMemberFrom Wikipedia –
‘Disproportionate dwarfism is characterized by one or more body parts being unusually large or small compared to the rest of the body. In achondroplasia one’s trunk is usually of average size, one’s limbs being proportionately shorter, one’s head usually larger, and a prominent forehead.[11] In at least one case achondroplasia resulted in a significantly smaller trunk and head.[12] Facial features are often affected and individual body parts may have problems associated with them. Orthopedic problems can result from multiple conditions such as diastrophic dysplasia and pseudoachondroplasia.Proportionate dwarfism is marked by body parts being proportional but smaller.[13] Height is significantly below average and there may be long periods without any significant growth.’
That’s how dwarfism “works” medically. I’d leave it up to the individual Machinist as to how to interpret it.
February 6, 2013 at 11:09 pm #18849
prswirveParticipanti think the definition of medical dwarfism from wikipedia is a lot different than the anatomy of dwarves from fantasy.
February 8, 2013 at 8:36 am #18783
HammerknightParticipantDwarfism and a fantasy Dwarf are two different things all together. In fantasy a Dwarf is a race of people, where dwarfism comes from the human race that can happen to anyone that have the right genes. I don’t think I really ever heard of the two being compared before. It is like and unwritten law that it is known that they are not one in the same. As for the the body shape of a fantasy dwarf, there are many to choose from. Your fairy tale dwarf(Snow White and the likes) are in ways just a small version of a human. Your fantasy dwarf is a barreled chested, broad shoulder, strong armed, battle ready, with short legs race. I could go on for ever on this subject, but I will leave it at that. All and all it goes with who ever is writing the story or drawing the picture.

WeilynMemberWow, I had completely forgotten about this thread, to be honest. Glad to see an interest was taken in it
After seeing all these better takes on dwarf anatomy, I was however spurred to make a second attempt.

He looks, in my opinion, way better than my original male dwarf, though perhaps a bit shorter than usual, and closer to the fairy tale type of dwarf mentioned by Hammerknight.
Will post a revision of the female dwarf shortly.

prswirveParticipantyeah that size is close to the dwarves depicted in snow white..

WeilynMemberYes, well my take on fantasy ususally tends to be a bit mor fairy tale oriented.
Anyway, here’s the female, too.

July 3, 2013 at 2:51 pm #27090
WMDBASSPLAYERParticipantI was looking for this! I could have used it a few days ago, because I couldn’t get the proportions right for a character I’m working on. As I look at this though, I’m thinking I may have to reclassify this character. I called her a dwarf, (I originally made her in 2.5 with the female dwarf template), but as I redo her in HM3, I guess she is more midget. What do you guys think? She’s in an action pose because I was working on something else before I found this tutorial. I think a midget is a proportionately correct little person, (though they find the term midget offensive). Anyway, I’m going to try another redux using Weilyn’s proportions.
July 6, 2013 at 1:06 pm #27204
WMDBASSPLAYERParticipantOK! After some tinkering, here’s Amy Atom redone using Weilyn’s dwarf proportions. Much better; what do you think of the action pose? I had to play with proportions of the left leg because that’s a male part. Not bad, I think!
