Thanks and tortured may be the wrong word, he was more shoved into an alley and had the living crap kicked out of him. He was left broken and alone and this changed him. The desire for vengeance changed him and he would subsequently train and hunt down his assaulters (some local thugs). The beating turned him from amiable thief to hardened killer.
